On a private safari the boat belongs to your group for the whole outing. You decide whether to follow the birds, linger at the temple or simply sit back and watch the river. When something catches your eye, say so and the rider slows down or turns.
On the water
You board at our station on Elathota Road in Balapitiya and head across the lake with your rider, who steers through open water, island channels and the tighter mangrove passages. Fishing nets, island homes and prawn farms slide past, which gives the trip a human side as well as a natural one.
Why a local rider makes the difference
Our riders know this water the way a taxi driver knows his town. They know which channels are deep enough, where birds feed at first light, which bank a water monitor prefers and when the tide makes a tunnel passable. Ask as many questions as you like; explaining the river is part of the job.
