The Ultimate Madu River boat safari begins the moment your private boat slips onto the Madu Ganga in Balapitiya, Sri Lanka and the world grows quiet. For two unhurried hours, the river keeps changing around you: open water where the sky fills the horizon, then narrow mangrove tunnels where the branches meet overhead and the light turns softly green.

Then come the islands. Families still make their home along the shores. On one island stands a Buddhist temple, on another a Hindu temple, two faiths sharing the same calm water. On Cinnamon Island, artisan families harvest and peel raw cinnamon as you watch, the fragrant bark curling away. You dip your feet into a natural fish foot spa, discover how prawns are raised on a local prawn farm and drift past Snake Island, an unusual island best seen from the boat.

Between the stops, there is time to look around: kingfishers and eagles overhead, monkeys in the trees, water monitors resting on the banks. Your experienced guide knows when to slow down and when to cut the engine, so you can hear the birds and the water.

Further on, the river opens to the point where the Madu River meets the Indian Ocean. Fresh juice and cool water wait on board, and boats run from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
